The word avanzo in Italian means both “leftover” and “I move forward”.

avanzo is a body that, facing away from the audience, forcefully drags leftovers of itself. The figure cannot withstand shifts in perspective and falls back into the inevitable transience of its wholeness, gathering up its own disintegration. Destined to die, it is suspended within the portrait of its perishable nature.

avanzo explores the subtle, suspended territory that exists between the Italian pictorial term natura morta and its English translation still life, which can be retranslated into Italian as vita lenta, ancora vita, vita ferma: on one hand, the term highlights the inescapable finite fate of a given nature; on the other, it emphasizes what persistently continues to live.
